This week, the Los Angeles Dodgers woke up from their championship celebrations and got started for the quest to win their third World Series in a row. They went out and bargained a deal with the New York Mets closer, Edwin Diaz. The deal brings the three time All-Star closer to Los Angeles to upgrade their one major weakness, the bullpen.
The Dodgers and Diaz agreed to a three-year $69 million dollar deal Tuesday morning. The former Mets closer moves from the New York skylines to sunny Los Angeles in his hunt for a World Series title with the reigning champions.
Los Angeles, with club legend Clayton Kershaw retiring and off the books, paid the Puerto Rican ace with hopes he can become their definitive closer this upcoming season.
The Dodgers won their second World Series in a row despite of their less than average bullpen. The bullpen in the playoffs had two starters converted into pen arms since the usual players weren’t up to par. Diaz fixes all of those issues by allowing Roki Sasaki to return to his starting role and take overt the closing position.
Diaz comes off a typical season performance for a player of his caliber. 2025 saw him finish the year with 66 innings pitched with a 1.63 ERA. A similar level of performance in 2026 will immensely aid Los Angeles in finishing games and not blowing saves.
The baseball world was under the impression that the Dodgers were planning on a quiet winter after winning back-to back titles. The reigning champions had other ideas, bolstering their bullpen with an All-Star closer on route to a possible third straight championship.
Dynasties don’t begin by running it back with the same team. They look and scavenge for every possible upgrade to keep on winning. Los Angeles proved that statement by breaking the wallet open for Diaz.
