ESPN Insider Sees Multi-Player Trade Possibility Between Yankees and Diamondbacks

The New York Yankees aren’t going to fix this with one trade. And according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, they know it is going to take some heavy lifting in the weeks before the trade deadline.

In a breakdown of the best deadline fits for every team above .500, Passan named Eugenio Suárez as the first move the Yankees should make, not the only one. New York has too many holes and too much pressure to settle for half-measures.

But third base has been a black hole all year, and Suárez checks a lot of boxes. After designating DJ LeMahieu for assignment on Wednesday, the Yankees' roster is better suited to add a third baseman, because Oswald Peraza remains as a backup shortstop.

He’s not a long-term commitment, because his contract is expiring after this season.

His power is real, his defense is solid, and he brings experience in big moments. This wouldn’t be a franchise-shifting blockbuster. It’d be a lineup-leveling fix—and a trial run in case he becomes a fit beyond 2025.

The bonus?

If the Yankees want to swing bigger, Arizona has more to offer. Zac Gallen or Merrill Kelly could upgrade a rotation that’s been held together by duct tape and doubleheaders. Pulling off a two-birds-one-stone deal would require serious prospect capital, but Passan’s point stands: Suárez is the kind of realistic move that addresses a real problem.

He also fits the Yankees’ financial comfort zone better than names like Nolan Arenado, Ryan McMahon, or Ke’Bryan Hayes, who are all owed significant money beyond this season. That alone could be the deal-breaker for those players. Suárez would cost prospects, but no long-term payroll risk.

Passan didn’t name just one need. He mentioned the bullpen, the rotation, the infield—all fair game. But if the Yankees are serious about fixing third base now, this may be their cleanest option.

It wouldn’t solve everything. But it would be a start.
