Estrada vs ‘Bam’ Rodriguez Fight Results: Bam Stops ‘El Gallo’
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

We have a new super flyweight king, and his name is Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez (20-0, 13 KOs). After both fighters’ masterful performance, Bam Rodriguez knocks out Juan Francisco Estrada (44-4, 28 KOs) in an instant classic. The fight lived up to the hype, but in the end, the younger Rodriguez prevailed over the older Estrada.

The first round was filled with high-level footwork and feints. Bam used his right jab well and landed a four-punch combination that got Estrada’s attention. Then, Estrada returned with a check left hook that stunned Bam for a quick second. Bam was using great shifting and landing some beautiful left uppercuts with his movements throughout the second round. Estrada would come back and land a slick, straight right hand that would stop Bam in his tracks.

Bam had a big third round as he hurt Estrada with a right hook, but the veteran champion would return and land a straight right hand to stop Bam in his tracks. Estrada had a great fourth round as he loaded up his right hand, but towards the end, Bam landed a left uppercut and a straight left, sending Estrada down for the fight’s first knockdown. Bam put on a masterful performance in round five as the shifting, left uppercuts, and straight left hands hurt Estrada badly, and somehow, Estrada survived the round.

Estrada came roaring back in the sixth round with three straight right hands, knocking Bam down for the first time in the fight. After a back-and-forth series, Bam lands a left hook to the liver, sending Estrada down and out, giving Bam the seventh-round knockout.

Sunny Edwards Wins By Technical Decision

A gruesome cut in the middle of the forehead of Sunny Edwards (21-1, 4 KOs) forced the fight to be stopped in the ninth round in his fight against Adrian Curiel (24-6-1, 5 KOs). The judges saw this one 90-82, 88-84 & 87-85 for Edwards as he earns a unanimous decision victory.

With his right jab and good movement, Edwards controlled the tempo in the first round. Curiel was mostly in the high guard defensive position throughout the round. Edwards showed a little showmanship in the second round as he played to the crowd and used his footwork to get him out of trouble. Curiel was throwing wild shots and missing, but when he could pin Edwards down, he was able to land some good body shots.

Edwards controlled the third round with just his feet and jab. Curiel could not figure out a way in, and Edwards had an easy round. It was all Edwards in rounds four and five, but in the sixth, an accidental headbutt opened up a nasty cut down the middle of Edwards’ forehead. Edwards fought with a ton of heart in the seventh round as blood ran down his face. At the start of the ninth round, the referee called time and brought over the ringside physician to check the cut, who recommended to the referee that the fight be stopped. Edwards won the fight but, for the second time in a row, left Arizona with some war wounds.

Yamileth Mercado Beats Ramla Ali By Unanimous Decision

It was the least entertaining fight on the card as the rounds went by fast, and the number of punches landed did not break any Compubox records. Yamileth Mercado (24-3, 5 KOs) retained her WBC super-bantamweight by defeating Ramla Ali (9-2, 2 KOs) via unanimous decision. The three judges had this one 98-92, 98-93 & 97-93 for Mercado, who can now move on to bigger fights while Ali returns to the drawing board.

Arturo Cardenas Earns A Razor Close Decision Victory

It was the opening card on DAZN, and the two super-bantamweight fighters put on a solid fight, leading to a close decision. Arturo Cardenas (14-0-1, 8 KOs) scored a majority decision over Danny Barrios (15-1, 5 KOs), with the judges seeing it 95-95, 97-93 and 96-94. Although the telecast thought that Barrios did just enough to win, he could not come away with the decision.

Barrios was the busier fighter in the opening round, as he pumped the right jab while consistently changing levels. Cardenas kept a high guard and countered with a straight right hand only a handful of times. Cardenas opened up in the second round with a straight right hand and a right uppercut, which caught Barrios’ attention. At this point, Barrios made a slight adjustment and moved to his left to land his straight left hand.

Barrios continued to dictate the pace with his movement and right jab from mid-range in the third round. Cardenas followed Barrios around the ring, which didn’t bode well for him as he got hit with the right jab. Barrios continued to show his solid footwork and speed, as his right jab was a lethal weapon for him in the fourth round. Cardenas’s corner gave him an earful at the end of the round as he was not doing enough. In the fifth round, Barrios kept landing his jab, but Cardenas finally connected with a four-punch combination that stunned Barrios. That combination and a strong right hand boosted Cardenas’ confidence in the fifth round.

Cardenas closed the distance in the sixth round, which allowed him to land some big punches. Cardenas landed a right hook to the head and a left hook to the body which hurt Barrios. His movement slowed down significantly in the seventh round, and Cardenas took advantage of it by throwing a decoy right hand and a left hook to the head. This combination buzzed Barrio again towards the end of the round. Cardenas kept applying a ton of pressure, and although Barrios was putting up a fight, Cardenas’ right uppercut and right hook made all the difference in the eighth round.

In the ninth round, Barrios swung the momentum back in his direction in the ninth round btu in spots, Cardenas was landing the big right uppercuts. Barrios felt like he did enough to win the round and danced for the last 10 seconds to avoid Cardenas. Barrios used his second wind to evade big punches from Cardenas while landing some hard counterpunches. Both men went down swinging during the last ten seconds of the fight.
