Eugenio Suarez Just Gave The Yankees Something To Think About

The New York Yankees have long been linked to power-hitting third baseman Eugenio Suarez.  He checks all the boxes for them to shore up the left side of the infield. And the Diamondbacks’ slugger didn’t hold back when asked about recent trade rumors linking him to the Yankees. It’s clear the veteran third baseman knows why he’s being mentioned and he likes the sound of it.

“It’s a team that wants to win,” Suárez told reporters at the All-Star Game Media session. “They’re hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”

That says a lot, especially coming from a guy who was tied for fourth in MLB with 29 homers, posted a .563 slugging percentage, and hit four homers in a single game this season. With a .277/.332/.587 slash line and 52 homers over the past 162 games, he’s not some reclamation project, he’s a weapon that can be used this postseason.

He’s a free agent after the season, and the Diamondbacks reportedly want young pitchers in return. That is a tough ask for a team like New York, which has lost two starters for the season and hasn’t gotten 2024 American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil back from injury yet this season.

The Yankees will have competition from the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers, who have a formidable farm system to deal from.

Still, Suárez’s comment shows he’s onboard if the Yankees can pull the trigger.

He sees the Yankees as a potential landing spot.  And with that kind of power, plus the chance to help plug a glaring hole at third base, the Yankees front office needs to consider him seriously.
