The Seattle Mariners hoped that Eugenio Suarez would be a solid contributor in a second tour of duty with the team. So far, it has not worked out well at all.
Take a look at Suarez's numbers. In 48 at-bats since rejoining the Mariners, he has one home run, one double and five RBI and is hitting .125. That's not what Seattle bargained for in the deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He has a slash line of .125/.173/.208, according to MLB.com. Suarez was performing at a much higher level for the Diamondbacks. With Arizona this season, he hit 36 home runs and 87 RBIs. His slash line with the D-backs was .248/.320/.576.
How does Suarez shape up in the homer category for active MLB third basemen right now? He is leading the list with Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero a close second.
While Suarez is still leading in that category, what's so frustrating for Mariners fans is that he has not been able to find his power stroke in the Pacific Northwest. Sure, Seattle has been hot as a team, even tying for the American League West lead with the Houston Astros earlier this week.
Two straight losses, though, have kicked the Mariners back 1.5 games in the division.
Suarez was supposed to add another power bat behind catcher Cal Raleigh in the Mariners' lineup. Looking at his numbers, though, it shows that Suarez is not living up to his end of the deal.
He's going to have to pick up the pace. Suarez has proven to be a great hitter in his career.
But his lack of power and inability to drive in runs must make Seattle manager Dan Wilson shake his head. Wilson, along with Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto, want to see Suarez regain his power stroke.
The Mariners are going to keep fighting for an AL postseason spot. If it's not as division champions, then a wild-card position will have to be their target.
Suarez knows how to hit a baseball a long, long way. Seattle keeps waiting for him to turn things around. He'd better start doing it now before it becomes too late.
