Eugenio Suarez Talks MLB Trade Deadline

Eugenio Suarez is part of the MLB All-Star Game for the second time in his career. He first made the Midsummer Classic in 2018 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds.

This season, Suarez has hit 30-plus home runs before the All-Star break for the first time in his career. The 33-year-old already made headlines back on April 26 when he hit four home runs in a single game, becoming part of MLB history.

His Arizona Diamondbacks head into the break with a 47-50 record, sitting fourth in the National League West. With the trade deadline approaching, there’s growing speculation that Arizona could be sellers, and Suarez may be one of the names on the move.

Now in his second season with the Diamondbacks, Suarez has already drawn interest from other clubs. Before the National League All-Star team took the field for practice Monday, Suarez was asked about a potential move to the New York Yankees, a team looking to bolster its offense.

“It’s a team that wants to win,” Suarez said. “They’re hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”

Suarez enters the break with a .250 batting average, 31 home runs and 78 RBIs. Last season, he hit 30 home runs in 158 games. His best year came in 2019 with Cincinnati when he blasted 49 homers and drove in 103 runs. That was his second season with 100-plus RBIs. He hit the mark again last year for a third time in his career.

For his career, Suarez owns a .249 batting average and has struck out 100 or more times in every full season since 2016, with the only exception being the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign.

The Diamondbacks are hitting .251 as a team and rank fourth in MLB with 141 home runs. Pitching, however, has been a weak spot. Arizona’s 4.65 team ERA ranks 26th in the majors.

The Diamondbacks return to action Friday when they host the St. Louis Cardinals. After that, the Houston Astros will come to town.
