The Boston Red Sox lineup had the lowest average age amongst the teams that reached the playoffs last year. Their front office brought in Willson Contreras on a trade deal this offseason to add some veteran presence to the batting card. Contreras is off to a solid start with his new team, even though the Red Sox had an utterly miserable opening month to the 2026 season.
The Boston Red Sox have not exactly turned a corner under interim manager Chad Tracy. They lost 3-1 at Fenway Park on Sunday to drop the three-game series to the Houston Astros. Willson Contreras feels that having many young batters in the lineup makes it harder for them to get out of a slump. Red Sox infielder Marcelo Mayer fired back at the comments from his older teammate.
“To me, that’s just kind of an excuse: blame the young guys,” he said, as per Sean McAdam of MassLive. “But at the end of the day, we’re all playing baseball—we’re all pros. We all know what we need to do. I don’t think we’re doing a good job with runners in scoring position. When you don’t do that, you don’t score runs.”
Willson Contreras told the media today that it probably doesn’t help that the Red Sox lineup has many young players not used to slumping.

Mayer was the fourth overall pick made by the Red Sox at the 2021 MLB draft. The 23-year-old made his debut for the team in May last year. He is batting .244/.313/.349 over 30 games this season with an 88 OPS+.
Willson Contreras believes the dismissal of Alex Cora is not helping the Boston Red Sox perform better on the field. On the contrary, he feels the Red Sox are becoming more complacent without their former manager.
“It’s different with Alex not here,” said Contreras. “But after Cora got fired, the guys got loose a little more because I feel like the tension was gone. That’s what I felt. That’s my own opinion. When Alex wasn’t in the dugout (anymore), the team was kinda like loose.”
Contreras is the most productive batter for Boston this season. He currently has a .280/.387/.492 slash line with seven home runs, 21 RBIs, and a 148 OPS+. Meanwhile, the Red Sox now have a 13-21 record to remain at the bottom of the American League East.
