The Philadelphia Phillies continued to build their coaching staff on Thursday, naming former New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as the infield and third-base coach.
General manager Dave Dombrowski confirmed the move during his end-of-season news conference in Philadelphia. The announcement comes two days after the Phillies named interim manager Don Mattingly their full-time skipper.
In his first season as Mets manager in 2024, Mendoza led the team to an 89-73 finish and a berth in the National League Championship Series. The Mets lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games.
Mendoza, 46, was fired halfway through the 2026 season as the Mets stood 34-47. His total record in New York was 206-199.
Reports Wednesday said the Phillies dismissed hitting coach Kevin Long and infield coach Bobby Dickerson. The Phillies ranked 28th in the majors in defensive efficiency in 2025.
Mendoza previously served as a roving defensive instructor in the New York Yankees' farm system, then infield coach on the Yankees' big-league staff.
