Former MLB star Yasiel Puig continues to face legal issues. The Cuban-born player starred in one of the league’s most controversial stories in recent years, and the consequences of his actions haven’t stopped.
Puig had three years of supervised release. He was found guilty of obstructing justice and lying to federal authorities during a 2022 investigation into an illegal sports gambling operation.
Puig will know his fate later this month, on May 26, with prosecutors pushing to send him behind bars.
Sam Blum of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that federal prosecutors are requesting that Puig serve prison time. Specifically, they want him to serve 18 months in jail, followed by three more years of supervised release.
Puig’s legal team disagrees with the punishment. They plan to ask the judge for probation.
“Yasiel Puig is a first-time offender who has already been punished through years of prosecution, reputational damage, financial consequences, and the effective destruction of his professional life,” Puig’s attorney, Keri Curtis Axel, told The Athletic via text.
“A prison sentence is not proportional to the conduct and would not accomplish any rehabilitative purpose here. The Court has complete discretion over the sentence, and the defense will request a sentence of probation.”
This whole situation could come to an end soon.
