The Minnesota Twins will recognize former manager Ron Gardenhire next month with one of the club’s highest honors.
On Tuesday, the organization announced that Gardenhire will receive the Herb Carneal Lifetime Achievement Award, which is named after the legendary former Twins broadcaster.
Gardenhire managed the Twins for 13 seasons from 2002-14, compiling a record of 1,068-1,039. He trails only Tom Kelly, whom he served under as third base coach for 11 seasons, in career wins in team history.
During his tenure, the Twins won the division six times, he was named AL Manager of the Year once (2010) and was a runner-up five other times.
Beloved by players and fans alike, “Gardy” also was very involved in the community off the field, raising money for various causes, including the Twins Community Fund, interacting with fans and mentoring the next generation. He also still remains a regular presence at TwinsFest other occasional Twins events.
Additionally, the Twins will honor Michael Beier, a coach in Foley, with the Terry Ryan Play Ball Minnesota Award.
The Diamond Awards are scheduled to take place on Jan. 23 at The Armory in Minneapolis. The event raises money for research, care and education of brain, muscle and nerve disorders at the University of Minnesota.
