Bullpens were already in chaos across Major League Baseball, but April showers apparently bring May injury bugs. The Orioles back end is suddenly in a Land of Confusion after closer Ryan Helsley landed on the IL with the dreaded elbow injury. Kenley Jansen has a groin issue that, as of now, has not landed him on the IL, but bears watching.
And the carousel spun again over the last week, so let’s get to work.
In the weekly Closer Confidential column, we group closers, and committees, into three cohorts:
Every week we take another team out of the Secure cohort. This week, Ryan Helsley, who just graduated to Secure last week, hit the IL with elbow issues, so that situation is not even shaky. Check the Seesaw group for those names likely to get chances. We’ve moved the Mets, Phillies and now the Orioles bullpens out of this top group and we worry for those who remain.

Robert Suárez continues to perform well, but I’ll keep him at 89 for now until I get indications about what will happen when Iglesias returns. There is potential trouble in Detroit with Kenley Jansen having what seems to be a minor groin issue. I anticipate some IL news, but I don’t have a crystal ball so I’ll hold steady until we know more. But Kyle Finnegan is again a name you should know. Pete Fairbanks landed on the IL with a nerve issue in his wrist/hand so the Marlins called up Tyler Phillips who will get some high leverage opportunities, but they are down in seesaw until we see more. Riley O’Brien has been very impressive. I anticipate he will be at or near the top of this group quickly. But small sample size so far….

Jakob Latz now has 3 saves for the Rangers while demonstrating good control. I’m not a huge fan of his stuff as he’s not striking out batters at typical closer rates, but I bumped him to the top of the seesaw group. I want to see more and will look closer in Week 6. I bumped up Bryan Baker a few points as he’s looked comfortable in Tampa. The Baltimore group took a plunge from Helsley’s 90 Confidence Grade to an in flux score of 77. I’m not sure what it’s going to look like at Camden Yards, but I have a bad feeling it will be bad before it gets good. The Astros bullpen is a mess. But Josh Hader will be starting his minor league rehab stint and hopes to return later in May. I’m not certain what’s up on Anaheim as they have shared saves this week, so we’ll hold them steady for another week.
