The Chicago Cubs continue to build a reputation as one of baseball’s best defensive teams, and Wednesday’s Gold Glove Award finalist announcement gives North Side fans another reason to be proud. Five Cubs were named finalists for the 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, the most of any National League team and tied with the Blue Jays for the most in the majors.
The five finalists are center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong, left fielder Ian Happ, shortstop Dansby Swanson, third baseman Alex Bregman and right fielder Seiya Suzuki. With finalists at five different positions, the Cubs have shown their defensive strength extends well beyond one or two standouts.
Crow-Armstrong, Happ, Swanson and Bregman have all won Gold Gloves before. Suzuki, who won five Golden Gloves in Japan, is chasing his first MLB Gold Glove since joining the Cubs in 2022. If Happ, Crow-Armstrong and Suzuki all win, the Cubs would become the first team to sweep all three outfield Gold Gloves in the same season, according to MLB.com.
The numbers back it up. Crow-Armstrong led the majors with 26 Outs Above Average and a +26 Fielding Run Value. Swanson finished with 16 OAA at shortstop, while Bregman’s nine OAA ranked second among MLB third basemen. Suzuki turned in a +8 Fielding Run Value and 14 Defensive Runs Saved, second among right fielders, and Happ added nine outfield assists.
Having five finalists is a significant accomplishment. Rather than relying only on offense, Chicago built a roster capable of preventing runs as well as scoring them, anchored by one of the most reliable middle infields in baseball. That makes this offseason interesting, though, because both Happ and Suzuki are set to hit free agency.
Crow-Armstrong’s spectacular range, Happ’s consistency, Swanson’s work at short, Bregman’s experience and Suzuki’s improvement in right field gave the Cubs a group of defenders who influenced games in different ways in 2026.
The winners will be announced Sunday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. CT during a special edition of “Baseball Tonight” on ESPN.
