Former Arizona Diamondbacks closer out for season

The 34-year-old pitcher was removed from Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the 8th inning with visible discomfort. Upon further imaging, Miller was diagnosed with a UCL sprain and will look for more opinions from doctors in the coming days on how to approach the injury.

However, the former D-Back is now possibly looking at a second Tommy John surgery that would put him out for the next season. When asked if he would consider retirement, Miller said “possibly,” but believes there’s still more he can give.

“I feel like I was having a really good year,” Shelby said, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. “I think there’s still a chance for me to go out there and play. It would just really depend on how I feel physically, where I’m at mentally… I think there’s plenty left in the tank as far as physical ability.”

Miller recently joined the Brewers in August, being traded from the D-Backs to Milwaukee at the trade deadline. Before leaving Arizona, the right-handed pitcher had cemented himself as an integral part of the bullpen and was often used as the team’s closer if Justin Martinez wasn’t available.

In his time with the Diamondbacks this season, Miller posted a 1.98 ERA and 10 saves in 36.1 innings. It was his second stint with the Diamondbacks, having previously played for the team from 2016 to 2018.

With an uncertain future ahead, the former Diamondback will weigh his options as he begins his long road to recovery.
