Former Braves Star Lands Unexpected Role With Struggling AL Club
USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this week, the Texas Rangers announced that former Braves star Bret Boone will be signing a deal to become the teams next hitting coach.

Boone, the older brother of New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, finds himself on a major league coaching staff for the first time in his career, as he is set to join the Rangers in Boston when the team begins a 3 game set with the Red Sox on Tuesday night. The move comes just one day after Texas fired former offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, as Boone is expected to be an excellent fit with the Rangers.

The 14 year major league veteran hit .266 with 252 home runs over 1,780 career games, while also delivering an impressive 1,021 RBI’s. The former Brave is credited with three all star appearances as well, spending time in Seattle, Cincinnati, San Diego, Minnesota and Atlanta over the course of his career.

The Texas Rangers currently find themselves with a record of 17-18, and are ranked dead last in the AL with 113 total runs (3.2 per game). After going through an absolutely brutal 2-9 stretch prior to the win against Seattle, Boone finds himself with an extremely tough task in front of him, as the former Brave will look to turn things around in Texas and help the team improve their offensive production.

Boone’s initial contract will run through the end of this season, as the 14 year veteran is expected to sign a new deal at the end of the year.
