The Los Angeles Dodgers have several needs to fill this season, most of which involve pitching. Names such as Kyle Finnegan, Felix Bautista, and Aroldis Chapman, among others, have been thrown around as potential targets; however, one former MLB GM says that the Dodgers are not expected to be active at the trade deadline. In a recent piece from The Athletic, Jim Bowden suggested that all the Dodgers need is to get their pitching staff healthy.
“The Dodgers are not expected to be active at the trade deadline, if they’re able to get their roster healthy,” Bowden writes while discussing trade targets for each MLB contender. “Three of their top starting pitchers — Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow, not to mention Roki Sasaki — are currently rehabbing, trying to work back from injuries. That’s three top-of-the-rotation starters, along with a rookie who is viewed as having that type of ceiling as well. If the Dodgers can get that trio healthy and maintain the health of their current rotation that includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Clayton Kershaw and Dustin May, they really won’t need any more pitching help considering some of their starters would be moving to the bullpen to provide more depth for that unit.”
Bowden notes the strength of the Dodger lineup, which needs no improvement. Los Angeles made all the moves they needed to over their busy offseason. However, while the many relief corps injuries may be implied, Bowden overlooked one reliever in particular. Tanner Scott, who was signed to be the Dodgers’ closer, has disappointed in that role, pitching to a 4.11 ERA on the season. Fellow star reliever, Kirby Yates, is also struggling to similar numbers.
One could easily imagine the Dodgers swiping another reliever if worse comes to worst. Bowden balks at listing any potential trade targets, but does note the potential for a starting pitching pursuit.
“For now, I didn’t list trade targets for the Dodgers,” Bowden continues. “However, they have endured a rash of pitching injuries, and if they get closer to the deadline and don’t have more of their top pitchers healthy or closer to returning, they could add yet another starter.”
