Former MLB player Jeremy Giambi dead at 47

Former big league first baseman and outfielder Jeremy Giambi died Wednesday at just 47 years old.

The news was relayed via Giambi's agent, Joel Wolfe, and reported by multiple outlets. Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, he passed away at his parents' home in Southern California. No more details were made available at the time.

Giambi began his career in the majors in 1998 with the Royals. He spent two years in Kansas City before joining the Athletics, where he'd stay for the next two-plus seasons, including two years with his brother Jason also on the team. Part of his time in Oakland was dramatized in the 2011 film "Moneyball," in which he was portrayed by Nick Porrazzo.

Midway through the 2002 season, Giambi was traded to the Phillies. The following year, he joined the Red Sox, where he'd appear in 50 games in 2003, his final season in the majors.

Giambi finished his big league career with a line of .263/.377/.430 and OPS+ of 111. He hit 52 homers over 510 games while driving in 209 runs.
