For most of the 2010s and into the 2020s, Jean Segura was one of the better middle infielders in Major League Baseball.
The native of Dominican Republic made the All-Star Game twice - once with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2014 and once with the Seattle Mariners in 2018 - during his 12 years in the bigs. His best season came in his lone year with the Arizona Diamondbacks when he finished with a 6.6 WAR upon slashing .319/.368/.499 while leading all of baseball with 203 hits.
Segura announced his retirement Wednesday through his agency, CAA Sports.
Segura mostly played shortstop in his career, though he began playing at second base and third base during the final years of his time. He last played in the Majors with the Miami Marlins in 2023.
Segura spent four years apiece with the Brewers and Phillies, including as the team's starting second baseman in the team's 2022 World Series run, near the beginning and the end of his career.
He began his career with the Los Angeles Angels, but played only one game with in southern California being dealt to Milwaukee in a trade for Zack Grienke. He was traded to Arizona, then Seattle before signing with the Marlins to finish his career.
The 35-year-old attempted final comebacks with the Cleveland Guardians and Baltimore Orioles but did not return the Majors.
He finished 13th in National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2016 with the Diamondbacks and finished his career with 1,545 hits and a .281 batting average.
