Former Red Sox All-Star’s Rafael Devers Trade Comments Go Viral

As a six-time All-Star with 368 career saves, Jonathan Papelbon knows all too well how things can change in a matter of minutes.

All it took was a simple blockbuster trade to remind Papelbon of that fact. Papelbon took to X/Twitter on Sunday night as rumors began swirling that the Red Sox sent their star DH to the San Francisco Giants

"Everyone calm down Devers isn't getting traded!" Papelbon wrote at 7:17 p.m. ET.

Fast forward to 7:26 p.m. ET, not even 10 minutes later, and Papelbon had a different message for his nearly 30,000 followers.

"Sorry I was wrong!" posted Papelbon, a Red Sox analyst for NESN. "Everyone go crazy Devers got traded!"

Papelbon's original post, the one reiterating that Devers wouldn't be traded, had 2.2 million views as of Monday morning. His follow-up had almost 800,000 views.

First off, Papelbon deserves credit for saying "I was wrong" and explicitly using those three words. More importantly, he's likely not alone in going "crazy" about the Red Sox trading arguably their most important and beloved player since legendary second baseman Dustin Pedroia.

Only hours after the Red Sox swept the rival New York Yankees, they traded Devers to the Giants for starting pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks, along with outfield prospect James Tibbs III and pitching prospect Jose Bello.

Devers went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, his 15th on the season, in his final Red Sox game. The three-time All-Star joins the Giants hitting .272 with 58 RBI, an AL-high 56 walks, and an impressive .905 OPS.
