Former Boston Red Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias has found a new home for the 2025 season. After rejuvenating his career with the New York Mets in 2024, Iglesias and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a one-year deal, per Robert Murray.
Iglesias has spent time with seven different teams in his career, and San Diego will be his eighth team. His contract is a minor-league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.
Iglesias spent the first two and a half seasons of his MLB career with the Red Sox, including a second-place finish in Rookie of the Year voting in 2013. He then bounced around the league before returning to Boston for half a season in 2021.
With the Mets in 2024, Iglesias had an absurd .337 batting average across 291 plate appearances, and he instantly became a fan favorite. Along with being a baseball player, Iglesias was a rapper, and his hit song "OMG" became a theme for the Mets. Iglesias even performed the song on the field after a game during last season.
The Padres bench is currently full, so Iglesias will have to beat out one of Connor Joe or Eugy Rosario to hopefully crack the Opening Day roster. If he can come even close to replicating his 2024 season, he could be a big part of San Diego's success. The Padres are still looking for their first World Series championship in franchise history, and a role player like Iglesias could help them reach that goal.
