Former Tigers Star Just Put Baseball on Notice About Riley Greene

Cameron Maybin has seen plenty of talent over his 19-year MLB career. So when he tweets about one of his former team’s rising stars, we should all listen.

On Sunday, right before Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene was getting ready to head to the All-Star Game, Maybin expressed how impressed he has been with the young Tiger.

Riley Greene might be the quietest superstar in the game right now. Just tied his career high with 24 bombs… and my guy is just scratching the surface.”

He’s not wrong.

Greene launched his 24th homer over the weekend, matching a career high, with two and a half months still left to play. He’s already passed last year’s RBI total. He’s hitting .355 with eight home runs since the start of June. His OPS during that stretch is north of 1.050. This isn’t a flash. It’s a full-on breakout.

And now, he’s heading to Atlanta to represent the Tigers in the All-Star Game.

It’s a well-earned nod.

Greene was slow to come to his superstardom. He had to adjust to the big leagues and deal with injuries. He’s been the offensive engine for a Detroit team that continues to hang around the top of the AL Central. While other pieces have gone cold or landed on the injured list, Greene has only gotten hotter.

He’s also doing it quietly. Just a 24-year-old who hits the ball hard, runs the bases well, and plays Gold Glove defense in left field. He won the Fielding Bible’s award for the position last year. He might do it again.

Maybin’s right. Greene might be the quietest superstar in the game.

But if he helps drive the Tigers deep into October, he won’t be under the radar much longer.
