FOX Sports has removed Cincinnati Reds television announcer Thom Brennaman from the network's NFL broadcasts after he said an anti-gay slur over the air during Wednesday's game between the Reds and Kansas City Royals.
The Reds suspended Brennaman late Wednesday night. Cincinnati hasn't updated his status with the club as of Thursday afternoon.
Per a statement shared by ESPN, FOX explained:
"Fox Sports is extremely disappointed with Thom Brennaman's remarks during Wednesday's Cincinnati Reds telecast. The language used was abhorrent, unacceptable, and not representative of the values of Fox Sports."
Brennaman apologized for the slur in the fifth inning of the second game of a doubleheader between the Reds and Royals before he turned play-by-play duties over to Jim Day.
According to the New York Times, GLAAD hit out at Brennaman's use of the slur and his apology:
“It’s disturbing how casually and recklessly Brennaman used an anti-gay slur while wearing a microphone during a live broadcast. His ‘apology’ was also incredibly weak and not enough. We are demanding full accountability from @Reds, @MLB and @FOXSports."
Outside of covering the story of his suspension, MLB has not yet commented on his role with the Reds or the league.
