Francisco Lindor Sends Clear Message on Pete Alonso's Future

With the New York Mets off to a 26-15 start, with star first baseman Pete Alonso hitting like he's never hit before, the questions now turn to a renegotiated deal.

The biggest change in Alonso's hitting is his on-base ability. The rookie home run leader and two-time Home Run Derby winner isn't known to get on base a lot, but is slashing .320/.434/.613, all career-highs.

Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract in the offseason, something the Mets dragged their feet on after Alonso hit to a career low .788 OPS and struck out at a near 25% clip.

With Alonso's tremendous performance in 2025, teammates are starting to notice, chief among them being Francisco Lindor.

Lindor sent a clear message regarding Alonso's future, echoing the calls to restructure his deal to make him a Met for life.

"He can hit any pitch in any location right now, he looks almost like a high average hitter that has a lot of pop, whereas before he was a power hitter," Lindor said. "His work ethic has been outstanding...I am so happy he's here."

It's high praise from someone who many Mets fans have ordained the unofficial captain of the team. Lindor announced April 17 that he would once again be the captain of the Puerto Rican men's national team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

It was the end to Lindor's gushing about Alonso that had many on notice, however.

"He’s one of the best power hitters in the game," Lindor said. "Hopefully, he stays with us for awhile.”

Alonso's Mets teammates have all noticed the star's transformation into an entirely new hitter. Alonso has cut down on his strikeouts, and his 2025 average exit velocity is 95 miles per hour, good for the 98th percentile.

Alonso will continue to be a force in the Mets' lineup, and owner Steve Cohen would not be unwise to pull out his checkbook and write up a new deal.
