Making it to the pros in any sport is hard, but having an elite performance in college can help. Gage Wood, right-handed pitcher for the Arkansas Razorbacks saved his best performance for the bright lights before the 2025 MLB Draft takes place. Let’s take a closer look at what he did on the mound on Monday afternoon and how this performance is going to be remembered for a very long time.
Gage Wood had a game to remember in the elimination game for the third-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks and the Murray State Racers. The junior right-hander was the first pitcher since 1960 and the third pitcher ever to throw a no-hitter in the College World Series. We almost saw a perfect game but the only baserunner was Dom Decker getting hit by a 2-2 breaking ball in his back foot to begin the eighth inning.
The defense for the Razorbacks was not tested much throughout the day as Gage Wood had a College World Series-record 19 strikeouts on the day as well. Arkansas advances to Tuesday night and will face the winner of the UCLA Bruins and LSU Tigers game on Monday night. However, we will not be seeing Wood back on the mound unless the Razorbacks continue their excellent run toward the NCAA Championship.
It was apparent this game could be special as 19 of Wood’s 20 fastballs were strikes. He is expected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming 2025 MLB Draft and it will be interesting to see how high he is selected and how much this game elevates his draft stock.
There is a chance that Gage Wood returns to the Arkansas Razorbacks for his senior season, but it is more likely to see this be the final season before he begins his journey to Major League Baseball. Omaha saw a classic performance on Monday and it will be interesting to see if he just unlocked something in potentially his final collegiate game of his career.
