Brewers vs. Red Sox

First Three

The Brewers started the game with a lead-off double from Sal Frelick, but Red Sox starter Sonny Gray got out of the jam, retiring the next three he faced. Former Red Sox prospect Shane Drohan was impressive through two innings for the Brewers, but in the third, it fell apart for him. Boston led off with back-to-back singles from Ceddanne Rafaela and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa. Both moved up 90 feet on a Roman Anthony groundout. Andruw Monasterio walked to load the bases. Drohan then lost control, walking Willson Contreras to bring home Rafaela and make it 1-0. Wilyer Abreu then singled, bringing home Kiner-Falefa. Trevor Story brought home Monasterio to make it 3-0. After a Caleb Durbin walk, that was it for Drohan. Grant Anderson came in relief and got out of the inning.

Middle Three

The middle three innings were quiet. The Red Sox had runners on first and second in the fourth, but that was it. Sonny Gray retired all nine batters he faced through the middle innings. He allowed only one extra base hit, and that came in the first inning on the first batter. Alex Cora did give him a handshake after the sixth, likely ending his day, but Gray forced his way back out for the seventh.

Last Three

In the top of the seventh, Gray’s day was done after a lead-off walk, then he got Luis Rengifo to ground into a force out, and Cora would come take him out. Greg Weissert came in relief. Weissert got Brandon Lockridge to strike out, then David Hamilton singled to give Milwaukee first and second. Joey Ortiz was on a full count, thought he walked, but Boston used ABS, and it was ruled a strike, and they escaped the inning. The Red Sox tacked on more runs in the seventh. Contreras and Abreu each had one-out singles, then Story singled home Contreras, and Caleb Durbin drove in Abreu on a groundout. The Durbin play was originally ruled a double play, but it was overturned.

Tyler Samaniego made his big league debut in the eighth inning, and he struck out the first batter he faced in Frelick. He would allow a walk before striking out the next two Brewers he faced. The Red Sox would get runners on first and second, but Milwaukee got out of the inning. Ryan Watson got the ninth, and he set the Brewers down 1-2-3, and the Red Sox win their first series of 2026.

Player of the Game

Sonny Gray was fantastic today. He went 6.1 shutout innings. He allowed three hits, two walks, and struck out two.
