Game Recap: Red Sox Bats Cooled off in Loss

The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox played the middle game of their three-game series today. Connelly Early got the ball for the Red Sox, Vásquez got the ball for the Padres.

Padres vs. Red Sox

First Three

Connelly Early started the game off with a strikeout. After allowing two walks, he got the last out to end the first inning. The Red Sox went down 1-2-3. In the top of the second inning, after a leadoff walk, Early allowed a single to Ty France, and Freddy Fermin, who had the leadoff walk, advanced to third. Fermin scored on a groundout to make it 1-0. Boston followed the Padres with a leadoff single and a walk, Caleb Durbin grounded into a force out, and with first and third, Marcelo Mayer drove home the runner from third with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the third, Miguel Andujar hit a one-out double, and Manny Machado followed that up with a walk. Fermin would then double and score Andujar to make it 2-1 Padres. The Red Sox led off the bottom of the third with a single, but after San Diego recorded an out, Ceddanne Rafaela would be caught stealing on the next batter.

Middle Three

The Padres went down in order in the fourth. The Red Sox got a leadoff single from Jarren Duran, who was retired on a double play. They then got back-to-back singles, but Mayer struck out to end the fourth. Early’s day was done early due to his high pitch count. The Padres got a one-out single followed by a walk, but that was all. The Red Sox in the fifth got a two-out triple from Roman Anthony, but Trevor Story grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the sixth, the Padres went down in order. The Red Sox would also go down in the order.

Last Three

Justin Slaten got the seventh for the Red Sox, and after two quick outs, Andujar singled, but Slaten ended the inning with a groundout. The Padres had Jeremiah Estrada replacing Randy Vasquez, and Estrada sent the Red Sox down 1-2-3. Zack Kelly got the eighth, and he retired the Padres in order. The Red Sox would get back-to-back singles from Rafaela and Anthony to start the bottom of the eighth. Rafaela advanced to third on the Anthony single. Trevor Story struck out, then pinch-hitter Andruw Monasterio grounded back to the pitch, but a tough throw to second, the Padres couldn’t turn the double play, and Rafaela scored. The Red Sox tied it 2-2.

Aroldis Chapman got the ninth, and after two outs, Fernando Tatis doubled he would then score on a Ramon Laureano to give San Diego the lead back. Andujar would fly out to end the inning. Mason Miller got the ninth in a save situation for the Padres. Miller would strike out the side, and the Padres win 3-2.

Player of the Game

Miguel Andjuar had a big day at the plate going 3-5. He had a double and a run scored.

The Red Sox and Padres wrap up their three-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1:35 PM EST. Ranger Suarez will get the ball for the Red Sox while Walker Buehler goes for the Padres.
