There haven't been many bright spots for the Boston Red Sox throughout the year, but it's tough to ignore what left-handed Garrett Crochet has done throughout the year.
Crochet, arguably the top starter in baseball, has been completely dominant, posting a 2.34 ERA and striking out an impressive 144 hitters in 115.1 Innings. Both of those figures lead the American League, and there's something to be said about that for Crochet. The strikeout numbers were expected, as he's always had some of the best strikeout stuff in the game, but the fact that this is the second year of him as a full-time starter and he's leading the league in innings certainly shows the type of competitor he is.
Crochet has also demonstrated his competitiveness in other areas, recently urging the Red Sox's front office to make the necessary moves at the deadline to win it all.
Sitting at 46-45, Boston is 6.5 games out in the American League East, but with some teams not playing too well ahead of him outside of the Toronto Blue Jays, it's possible the Red Sox could be in the mix come October.
“You want to do as good of a job as you can as a clubhouse and as a unit to make sure ownership knows there’s a reason to buy in,” Crochet said, per NESN. “I think that right now we’re giving them plenty of reasons.”
The Red Sox, at the very least, should have an opportunity to compete for a Wild Card spot. Depending on how things go over the next few months, Crochet will be a big part, and so will the deadline decisions they make.
