Toronto Blue Jays star right fielder George Springer missed nearly three weeks in April due to a fracture in his left big toe. Springer fouled a ball off his foot against the Minnesota Twins on April 11 and was put on the 10-day injured list the following day.

He was finally activated off the IL on Wednesday, returning to the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Thursday.

On Saturday, against the Twins once again, Springer was hit by a pitch from Minnesota starting pitcher Connor Prielipp directly on the same toe that was fractured last month. He exited the game after being hit, as Jesus Sanchez came in as a pinch runner.

After the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider announced an update Springer's condition, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.

"An X-Ray of George Springer’s left foot revealed only the existing fracture in his left big toe; no new damage. He was going to get a day off on Sunday regardless. Blue Jays manager John Schneider says 'hopefully he’ll be all right in a day or two,'" Zwelling said.

Heading into Saturday's game against the Twins, Springer had played in 17 games this season, slashing .215/.301/.369 with an OPS of just .671, as he sputtered out of the gates to start the year. He has also hit just two home runs with seven RBIs.

The four-time All-Star and 2017 World Series MVP was a big part of the Blue Jays' success in winning the American League pennant last season. In the 2025 playoffs, Springer batted .284 with an .899 OPS, totaling four long balls and 10 RBIs.

If he is forced to miss an extended period of time again this season, it would not bode well for a Toronto team that has struggled through the first month of the year.

Saturday was the second of a three-game series between Toronto and Minnesota, which will finish on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 p.m. ET.
