Geraldo Perdomo Out of Diamondbacks' Lineup After Injury Scare

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Geraldo Perdomo will not be present in their starting lineup for Tuesday night's game two matchup with the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field.

On Monday night, ahead of the fifth inning of what would eventually become a 9-0 blowout victory for the Diamondbacks, Perdomo was lifted for utility infielder Ildemaro Vargas. It was a bit early for a "half day off" situation, though the score was 7-0 in Arizona's favor at the time.

It was later announced Perdomo left with left knee soreness. It is not the same knee he had surgery on in 2024.

Following the game, manager Torey Lovullo did not sound concerned. He said if the score had been tighter, Perdomo would have remained in the game, and that the issue was one Perdomo had felt arise during the Dodgers series, not in any particular instance on Monday night.

Lovullo gave Perdomo a "fifty-fifty" shot to play Tuesday, and said the shortstop would not have to undergo any imaging. It's not clear if those plans have changed, but Perdomo's position will be occupied by Vargas once again.

Here's what Arizona's Perdomo-free lineup looks like for their game two matchup against the Rockies:

Perdomo's numbers do not look as shiny this season, compared to the MVP-caliber campaign he had in the 2025 season. He's still been productive overall, but he's hitting just .244/.359/.374 for a .733 OPS — nearly identical to his career averages.

What he has done is play exceptional defense at shortstop. He's been worth +7 Defensive Runs Saved, +7 Fielding Run Value and +9 Outs Above Average.

Losing Perdomo's bat for an extended period would not sting nearly as much as losing his glove, or his infield leadership. However, the bat has been hot in the month of August. Perdomo is hitting .368/.442/.579 in 43 plate appearances this month.

Vargas made shortstop look easy in his brief stint there Monday night, but he's been a much sharper defender at first and second base this season. In terms of offense, Vargas' numbers are somewhat comparable. He's hit .271/.317/.408 this season, cooling off after a historic start to 2026. He did, however, hit .344 in July.

It's possible Perdomo's absence does not mean any extended downtime is coming. The Diamondbacks should be able to take care of business against a struggling Rockies club without him, so it might be best to let him sit, for the time being. The playoff chase gets tougher after this series ends.
