Gerrit Cole Spring Debut 2026: Fantasy Baseball Impact & Draft Outlook

Just 53 weeks ago, Gerrit Cole went under the knife to repair the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. The repair with an internal brace inserted to support the process has been lauded for quicker recovery times than traditional Tommy John surgery. It also seems to provide better results in terms of return to a pitcher’s original velocity.

Cole this week made his return to the mound, throwing one inning in a spring training game. His 10 pitches included two fastballs thrown at an impressive 98 mph. Cole had been tabbed to return around June 1, but does his throwing in spring training move that timetable up? Should fantasy baseball owners adjust their draft plans accordingly?

Recovery Timeline & Key Milestones

Although Cole received the internal brace procedure, the Yankees have been cautious with his care, rehab, and throwing program. Cole is 35 years old and recovery from any UCL procedure at his age is a riskier proposition than for a younger arm.

Long ago, the team set a June 1 target date for his return, which would give him four full months of this season plus additional healthy years beyond 2026 – the ultimate goal of a slower timeline.

Cole’s next milestones include two or three inning outings, live batting practice and simulated games. He will essentially need the equivalent of a full six-week spring training, and probably more after such a long layoff, to be ready for June 1.

Additionally, how he reacts to bullpen sessions and throwing consecutive days will be critical to the team’s activation plans. If his velocity trails off a bit, his timeline could be pushed back.

For now, the club says his spring outing does not affect his June 1 timeline, citing those above mentioned goals for Cole to meet.

Fantasy Baseball Impact & Draft Strategy

The question on the mind of fantasy baseball managers this spring is “Should I draft Gerrit Cole?” The answer clearly depends in part of your league’s roster size or how it treats IL players. Those who can stash Cole for about nine or 10 weeks are far more likely to try to roster Cole. Those with short benches or no IL slots would take a much bigger risk.

Cole is being drafted at 211 overall, but several platforms (Yahoo, ESPN, CBS) have him going before 200, so know your platform before the draft and see where Cole is ranked and being drafted.

But, for me, the additional question is “How good can Cole even be over four months?”

Cole had great seasons with the Yankees in 2021-2023, his age 30-32 seasons. He averaged 197 innings in those seasons. Since then he has pitched a total of just 95 frames and first experienced elbow issues in 2024. Prior to 2024, he was striking out about 12 batters per nine innings, but his velocity fell a tick even in 2023, and then again in 2024.

His 98 mph this spring indicates a strong rebuilt elbow and is an encouraging initial indication.

But three seasons removed from his status as an ace, can we or should we assume he can regain that status, even with heightened velocity in the second half? Maybe it’s time to visit a fortune teller, as a strong second half Gerrit Cole can be a huge part of a championship fantasy baseball team. A mediocre Cole who holds a roster spot hostage for two months of the season, though, could have the reverse effect.
