Prior to 2024, he was striking out about 12 batters per nine innings, but his velocity fell a tick even in 2023, and then again in 2024.

His 98 mph this spring indicates a strong rebuilt elbow and is an encouraging initial indication.

But three seasons removed from his status as an ace, can we or should we assume he can regain that status, even with heightened velocity in the second half? A mediocre Cole who holds a roster spot hostage for two months of the season, though, could have the reverse effect.
