Giants' disaster season continues with latest Matt Chapman update

Headed into the 2026 MLB season, the San Francisco Giants had garnered quite a bit of attention for several reasons.

An expensive infield along with the hiring of first-year manager Tony Vitello was enough for the Giants to host the opening game of the 2026 season against the New York Yankees.

The season has only gone downhill from there and more negative news emerged out of San Francisco on Monday.

Matt Chapman is out for the season

One of the aforementioned expensive infielders for the Giants is third baseman Matt Chapman.

Chapman is in the midst of a six-year, $151 million contract that runs through the 2029 season. That contract is continuing to look worse and the latest update on Chapman has put an end to a third straight disappointing season in a Giants uniform.

Chapman has been on the injured list since July 1 and his season now appears to be finished, as he is set to undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday.

Just how disappointing has Matt Chapman been for San Francisco Giants?

With Chapman's 2026 season now officially done, he is approximately halfway through his contract with San Francisco.

In that time, he's appeared in 366 of a possible 486 games (75.3%) and posted a slash line of .239/.331/.430 with an OPS of .761 across 1,336 at-bats.

Chapman's health entering the 2027 season, whenever that may begin, will be a key for the Giants' success. If Chapman is both injured and unproductive again next season, those final two years on his contract may not be played out in the orange and black.
