The first blockbuster trade has taken place in the MLB on Father's Day, and it may come with some bad blood for Rafael Devers and his former team.
In a five-player trade between the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants, Boston was able to go out and get a much-needed left-handed bat to upgrade their lineup for a push in the NL West.
As Devers heads to San Francisco, Boston will be bringing in a list of pitchers that includes LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, minor league pitcher Jose Bello, and outfielder James TIbbs III for the All-Star Devers.
The Giants will also be taking on Devers' massive, $250+ million contract he is owed over eight years, ending in 2033.
General manager Buster Posey explained his mindset when making the blockbuster deal, saying, "My thoughts are it's really hard to acquire this type of talent at this point in his career. We're obviously taking on a lot of money, we're giving up some pitching, giving up our first-round pick from last year, so this didn't come without a cost. But felt like this was a chance to take a shot," Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reported.
Giants manager Bob Melvin also explained that he supported GM Posey's claims.
"This fits us perfectly. It's a power left-handed bat, a guy who can go the other way and hit for power in our ballpark... To get it done right now for a team lacking a left-handed bat and lacking power, this should be a huge boost for us," Melvin said.
Boston was able to move on from a huge contract, the largest on the roster, and add some young pitching depth as well as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft in James Tibbs III.
Although it doesn't look all that appealing for Boston fans right now, they will continue to contend this season while also investing for the future.
