Giants Get Casey Schmitt Update After Exiting Starting Lineup

The San Francisco Giants scratched utility player Casey Schmitt from Sunday's starting lineup against the Atlanta Braves due to illness, forcing a late adjustment before the series finale. Schmitt is considered day-to-day and has not been placed on the injured list, making the move a precaution rather than a sign of anything more serious.

With Schmitt unavailable, Matt Chapman remained at third base while Luis Arraez started at second, Heliot Ramos returned as the designated hitter, Victor Bericoto moved into left field and Jonah Cox started in center. The reshuffled lineup came as San Francisco prepared to face Braves left-hander Chris Sale in the deciding game of the series.

Schmitt has been one of the Giants' most consistent offensive contributors during his breakout 2026 campaign. Through 74 games, the 26-year-old has posted a .290 batting average, .316 on-base percentage, .824 OPS, 16 home runs, 42 RBIs and seven stolen bases while leading the club in home runs.

His production has come alongside an expanded defensive role, making him one of the roster's most valuable players.

Drafted in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft out of San Diego State, Schmitt has appeared at every infield position, left field and designated hitter this season, giving manager Chris Vitello flexibility to adjust the lineup whenever injuries have surfaced.

That versatility became even more important after Schmitt returned from an oblique strain that sidelined him for about a month earlier this season.

Following his activation in May, he settled into an everyday role and successfully transitioned to left field after Ramos suffered a quad injury, helping stabilize an offense that had been searching for consistency.

Schmitt entered Sunday swinging the bat well after collecting a hit and scoring a run in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Atlanta. Earlier this month, he also delivered one of his best performances of the season, going three for four with a home run and two doubles against the Miami Marlins

San Francisco entered the day with a 34-48 record, sitting fourth in the National League West. Because Schmitt's absence was caused by illness rather than another injury, the Giants are optimistic he can return quickly if his symptoms improve.

Getting their leading home run hitter back in the lineup sooner rather than later would go a long way for a team that needs every advantage it can find right now.
