Giants Get Concerning Matt Chapman Update

With Matt Chapman on the 10-day injured list with right-hand inflammation, Casey Schmitt has started three consecutive games at third base for the San Francisco Giants.

Chapman said he’ll know more about his timetable after he’s evaluated by hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Friday. He’s already expected to miss more than the minimum 10 days and is hoping to return by the end of the first half.

While the Giants await the results of that evaluation, ESPN’s Buster Olney reports there’s concern Chapman could be sidelined through at least the end of June.

Losing Chapman is a significant blow for the Giants, as the third baseman was batting .243 with an .812 OPS and a team-high 12 home runs over 65 games this season.

It's a frustrating bump in the road for the Giants, who have outperformed expectations in a big way this year. At 40-29, they're one game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (41-28) in the National League West and sit atop the Wild Card mix.

Chapman has been a major part of that success. Before the injury, he was on a tear of late, hitting .322/.429/.610 with a 194 wRC+ over his past 17 games.
