Giants make bonkers MLB history with latest loss

The San Francisco Giants are going through a bad season, which was made even worse on Friday. San Francisco made Major League Baseball history after blowing yet another save opportunity. The Giants lost to the Colorado Rockies, 4-3.

“The Giants have now blown a 9th-inning lead and lost the game 8 times this season. That’s the most by any team before the All-Star break in MLB history (since the All-Star Game began in 1933),” the X account OptaSTATS posted.

San Francisco entered the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead. The Giants allowed three runs in the top of the ninth to lowly Colorado. The loss dropped the Giants to 39-55 on the season.

The loss stings even more for the Giants after having a late lead against a struggling Rockies club. San Francisco is fourth in the National League West, while Colorado is dead last.

“It is only the third time in 51 games this season that the Rockies have won despite trailing after eight innings,” MLB.com reported.

San Francisco nearly battled back in the bottom of the ninth. The Giants had the bases loaded, but Colorado was able to get the final three outs needed to take the game.

“We take pride in our defense,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “The guys showed up for sure. Good pitching overall. And we played good defense.”

The Giants are led by embattled first-year manager Tony Vitello. Vitello had success as a college baseball manager, but his tenure with the Giants this season has been abysmal so far. Rumors swirl that Vitello will leave the team after this season.

Giants fans have felt the frustration. San Francisco has been booed at home games this year. Following Friday’s loss, those boos may continue.

San Francisco plays the Rockies again on Saturday. The Giants have now dropped six of their last 10 games. Both clubs are now more than 20 games behind first place in the NL West.
