The San Francisco Giants on Friday placed right-hander Tyler Mahle on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain, with the move retroactive to Wednesday. In corresponding transactions, Logan Webb was reinstated from the 15-day IL after dealing with right knee bursitis. The team also activated outfielder Jung Hoo Lee from the 10-day IL following a back strain, while Will Brennan was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Victor Bericoto, who was previously called up when Lee was unavailable, remains on the active roster as a right-handed bench option.
Mahle’s injury may have occurred during his most recent outing on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he allowed 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3 across 5 innings, his seventh loss of the season. He is eligible to return from the IL in mid-June, though the recovery timeline will depend on further testing of the hamstring.
The $10MM free agent signing has scuffled through 11 starts, recording just one quality start. He has allowed more than 6 earned runs per nine innings and has been hit hard in his last four appearances. While he has struck out 23% of opposing hitters, his 8% swinging-strike rate suggests limited swing-and-miss upside, and that lack of separation has shown up in the form of 11 home runs allowed, which ranks among the top 10 in the National League.
With Mahle out, the Giants may turn to a starter from Triple-A Sacramento to maintain their six-man rotation, especially with Trevor McDonald performing well in a back-end role and Adrian Houser also in rotation consideration.
