The San Francisco Giants are making an important change to their pitching staff ahead of their game against the Miami Marlins.

Manager Tony Vitello announced that right-hander Adrian Houser will not make his next scheduled start and will instead move to the bullpen going forward.

The decision is one of the club's biggest pitching adjustments this season, as the Giants search for answers after a difficult start to the year. With San Francisco trying to climb in the standings, the move signals the organization is no longer willing to wait for Houser to figure things out and believes a different role could benefit both the veteran and the team.

Vitello confirmed the decision while discussing the club's plans ahead of the Marlins matchup. "Adrian Houser won't make his next start and is moving to the bullpen going forward, Vitello said," reported Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Houser, who has been inconsistent in his outings, has struggled to provide stability in the rotation despite flashing signs of impact at times. The Giants, who had backed the veteran through the first two months of the season, have lost patience due to recent results and his ongoing struggles.

Houser's 2026 season has been a difficult one. He has posted a 5.49 ERA through 12 starts and has consistently run into trouble the third time through the lineup. Those struggles have become a pattern and ultimately contributed to the decision to shift him to the bullpen.

San Francisco signed Houser to a two-year, $22 million deal this past offseason after he rebuilt his value with strong performances for the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays in 2025.

The Giants believed that improved form would carry over and stabilize their rotation, but the results have fallen well short of expectations. Over nine major-league seasons, Houser has compiled a 40-44 record, a 4.06 ERA and 576 strikeouts, an otherwise solid track record despite his recent struggles.

The timing matters for a Giants team that enters the Marlins series with a 23-36 record and is already facing questions about its pitching depth.

The bullpen has been one of the club's weaker areas all season, and the loss of Randy Rodriguez to Tommy John surgery has only made things more complicated.

Still, the Giants are convinced that keeping Houser in the rotation is no longer their best option. The move opens a spot in the starting staff while adding an experienced arm to a bullpen badly in need of reliable innings.

Whether it fixes the rotation, strengthens the bullpen or accomplishes both remains to be seen, but it is a storyline worth watching as San Francisco tries to climb back into playoff contention in the second half.
