Greg Maddux’s brother among 3 Angels coaches fired

After having already making big changes in the front office by firing general manager Perry Minasian and naming longtime St. Louis Cardinals executive John Mozeliak as the interim, the Los Angeles Angels are now switching things up with the coaching staff. On Tuesday, the club announced three coaches have been fired, including a brother to Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux.

Reports indicate that the Angels are letting go of three pitching coaches, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The decision comes after L.A. has allowed the most walks in MLB this season, with the pitching group owning a collective 4.53 ERA.

“The Los Angeles Angels fired pitching coach Mike Maddux, assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott and bullpen coach Dom Chiti, sources tell ESPN,” Passan reported. “Maddux joined them in the offseason and was working on a one-year contract. Angels pitchers have a 4.53 ERA and the most walks in MLB.”

Shortly after firing three pitching coaches from the roster, the Angels announced Tim Leveque is stepping in as the interim pitching coach, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Additionally, Michael Wuertz is the interim bullpen coach.

“Team announces Tim Leveque as interim pitching coach and Michael Wuertz as interim bullpen coach,” Rosenthal reported.

Mike Maddux is the older brother of Greg Maddux by four years. He played 15 years in MLB (1986-2000), going back and forth between playing as a starter and a reliever. Maddux started his coaching career in 2003 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He was part of the 2023 coaching staff of the Texas Rangers team that won the World Series.

The Angels are going through some major changes this season, which is a long time coming. These decisions are setting up for what could be an interesting offseason for Los Angeles.
