Guardians announce 2 roster moves during Pirates series

The Cleveland Guardians announced two roster moves on Saturday between their two games of a doubleheader against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Left-handed pitcher Will Dion was recalled from Triple-A while right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer was optioned to Triple-A.

Dion, 26, has only made six total career outings at the big league level. However, in 21 appearances at Triple-A this season, Dion has recorded a respectable 3.62 ERA. With Tim Herrin still recovering from injury, Dion will provide the Guardians’ bullpen with another left-handed pitching option.

Heuer, 30, has pitched in seven games with the Guardians this season, turning in a 5.63 ERA during that span. Despite his struggles, he offers valuable relief pitching depth for Cleveland. It would not be surprising to see him pitch at the MLB level at some point once again this year.

Cleveland is a half-game behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the American League Central standings right now after losing the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday 7-1. The Guards are set to play the Pirates once again on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the White Sox were defeated 1-0 by the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.

Cleveland features the potential to win the division. Offensive struggles and bullpen inconsistency have been the two most pressing concerns for the ball club, though. The starting rotation has impressed, but the Guards will probably look to trade for a hitter or two and a reliever before the upcoming deadline.

For now, Cleveland will hope that Will Dion can give the bullpen a boost.
