The Cleveland Guardians are set to play the Boston Red Sox on Friday in the first contest of a three-game series. On Thursday, it was announced that outfielder Steven Kwan was placed on the bereavement/family medical emergency list. Before Friday’s game, the Guardians announced that outfielder Stuart Fairchild was promoted to the big league roster, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. Infielder Gabriel Arias was transferred to the 60-day injured list as well, Stebbins reports.

Fairchild, 30, last appeared at the MLB level during the 2025 season with the Atlanta Braves. He has spent parts of MLB seasons with the Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants since 2021. Cleveland signed Fairchild to a minor league contract this past offseason, and now he is set to make his Guardians debut.

In 40 games played at the Triple-A level this year, Fairchild recorded a slash line of .289/.417/.479 across 142 at-bats. He added five home runs, eight doubles, two triples and nine stolen bases. Fairchild could make a significant impact with Cleveland. At the very least, he will provide the Guardians with crucial right-handed outfield depth.

The Guardians have performed well this season overall. Cleveland holds a 33-25 record at the moment. The ball club has a three-game lead in the American League Central standings over the second place Chicago White Sox.

Their series against the Red Sox will begin on Friday night in Cleveland. First pitch for the Red Sox and Guardians game on Friday is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST at Progressive Field.
