The Cleveland Guardians are reportedly signing Rhys Hoskins to a contract. Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported that Hoskins was in the Guardians' clubhouse Sunday morning before later revealing the following information: "Source: Once finalized, the Guardians’ deal with Hoskins would be a minor-league contract that pays him a base salary of $1.5M should he make the major-league roster."

It was a surprising move to say the least. Cleveland was not previously linked to the right-handed slugger. Recent rumors even suggested that a Philadelphia Phillies reunion could be a possibility for Hoskins. Now, he is set to compete for a big league spot with Cleveland.

How will this move impact the Guardians, though? Will Hoskins have an everyday role if he makes the team?

Guardians Adding Rhys Hoskins

Hoskins, 32, has previously played with the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. Although he has never been an All-Star, there was a time when he was considered to be one of the better first baseman in MLB.

Hoskins provides valuable power from the right side of the plate. During his prime, he was a guy who could hit around 30 home runs while also getting on base at a respectable rate. For example, Hoskins crushed 29 homers and led the league with 116 walks in 2019 with the Phillies.

In 2024 and 2025, Hoskins played with the Brewers. He only appeared in 90 total contests with Milwaukee during the '25 campaign, hitting .237 with a .748 OPS during that span. He still displayed his power by hitting 12 home runs.

He had a quiet free agency before landing with the Guards. Hoskins should receive respectable playing time in Cleveland with the Guardians if he makes the roster. He will likely spend most of his time at first base and/or designated hitter.

Kyle Manzardo is the team's current first baseman. A left-handed hitter, Cleveland could consider implementing a platoon with Manzardo and Hoskins. There is a chance that the Guardians want Manzardo to play every day, though. CJ Kayfus is another first base/DH option. If Hoskins ends up on the roster, Kayfus could end up in either a bench role or in Triple-A.

The Guardians will have a big decision to make after signing Rhys Hoskins. Regardless of their decision, Hoskins' skill set as a right-handed power bat projects to make him the perfect fit for a Guardians' lineup that needs offensive help.
