Guardians’ Gavin Williams likes comment linking him to Braves

The Atlanta Braves are being linked to stars after their disappointing NLDS defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager’s name has popped up, and now, so has Cleveland Guardians pitcher Gavin Williams.

In the aftermath of the Guardians’ elimination to the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS, Williams sent out an Instagram post with the touching caption:

“See you next year Cleveland❤️”

However, a user named fireman 1231_ commented on the post, saying, “Nahhh he’s coming to ATL, I’m on the phone right now with em,” which Williams then liked.

The fan was most likely making a joke by saying they were on the phone with the Atlanta Braves at the time, and Williams’ like was an acknowledgement of said joke.

In reality, it’s very hard to see Williams moving to the Braves or anywhere else, for that matter. That’s because he is under team control through 2029, meaning he will not reach free agency until 2030. And he might not make it then if he decides to sign a long-term deal. However, he is a Scott Boras client, so that scenario of him signing before free agency seems a bit unlikely.

The Guardians will be keen to lock Williams up after another strong season. He was one of the pillars of the Cleveland rotation this past season, going 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA. Williams also performed well in the postseason as he finished with a 2.16 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 16.2 innings over four appearances (three starts, one relief).

As much as the Braves or any other team would love to add a pitcher of Williams’ caliber to their starting rotation, it seems highly unlikely, no matter what some dude on Williams’ Instagram comments section says.
