The Cleveland Guardians recently received a crushing blow, as it was revealed that star third baseman Jose Ramirez suffered a left hamate fracture. Trying to find a way to consistently win games without their best player will be a challenge for the Guardians to say the least. Ramirez is reportedly expected to miss five to seven weeks after undergoing surgery on Tuesday, per Zack Meisel of The Athletic.

The 33-year-old was hitting .239/.339/.418 to go along with 10 home runs and 24 stolen bases before suffering the injury. Although Ramirez was underperforming as far as his standards are concerned, he was still making an impact for the Guardians.

It would not be surprising to see Ramirez’s injury impact the Guardians’ trade deadline plans. Many teams wait until the middle of July to begin making big trades. Cleveland, however, could look to acquire a hitter or two earlier with Ramirez out due to injury.

The Guardians’ offense has no shortage of uncertainty and scoring runs was already a challenge even with Ramirez in the lineup. Scoring runs will be especially difficult amid Ramirez’s injury absence to say the least.

The good news is that the third baseman is expected to return this year. As long as Cleveland can remain competitive they will be in a good position to make a postseason run once Ramirez returns.

Updates on Jose Ramirez’s injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. Meanwhile, the Guardians are playing the Brewers in Milwaukee on Tuesday.
