Guardians Make Pitching Decision With Season on the Line

The Cleveland Guardians are turning to Gavin Williams for their biggest game of the postseason. Manager Stephen Vogt announced that the right-hander will start Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Chicago White Sox.

MLB.com Guardians reporter Tim Stebbins shared the news on X, including Vogt’s explanation that Williams wants the ball for the winner-take-all matchup.

“It’s a Game 5, win or go home,” Vogt said. “Gavin wants the ball. We want him to have the ball, and it’s his game.”

Vogt also made clear that Williams’ outing will depend on how the game develops. The manager indicated that the right-hander could work deep into the contest, but Cleveland will evaluate when it is time to turn to the bullpen.

That flexibility could prove important in a game where one difficult inning can change an entire season. Williams will need to attack the strike zone, limit free passes and prevent Chicago from building early momentum.

The Guardians have already shown resilience by fighting back to force a decisive fifth game. Now, they must turn that comeback into a series victory against a White Sox team with the same opportunity to advance.

Williams’ assignment places Cleveland’s hopes in the hands of a starter who will need to handle the pressure while giving his team a chance to control the game. His effectiveness could also determine how much work Vogt needs from the relief corps.

The Guardians cannot afford to focus exclusively on the pitching matchup, however. Their offense must provide support and capitalize on scoring opportunities to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on Williams.

With the series on the line, Cleveland’s plan is straightforward: let its starter establish the tone, then make adjustments as necessary. Vogt has left open the possibility of a lengthy outing while making clear that the game itself will dictate the next move.

For Williams, the opportunity is significant. A strong performance could help Cleveland secure its place in the American League Championship Series. A difficult outing, however, could bring the Guardians’ season to an abrupt end.

Game 5 will determine which team advances, and Cleveland has made its first major decision. Williams gets the ball, with the season hanging in the balance.
