Parker Messick will start Game 5 of the American League Championship Series for the Cleveland Guardians, manager Stephen Vogt confirmed Sunday. Cleveland will turn to the left-hander with its postseason hopes at stake against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The announcement follows Tampa Bay’s 7-3 victory in Game 4 on Saturday, which evened the best-of-seven series at two wins apiece. The Guardians now need a win at Progressive Field to move within one victory of reaching the World Series.
According to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com, Vogt confirmed Messick as Cleveland’s Game 5 starter. The decision gives the Guardians a clear plan for a matchup that could determine which team takes control of the series.

The Guardians enter the game after using seven pitchers in Saturday’s loss. Shawn Armstrong opened the contest, followed by Foster Griffin, Daniel Espino, Tim Herrin, Slade Cecconi, Matt Festa and Joey Cantillo. That workload made the choice of a starting pitcher particularly important as Cleveland prepares for another elimination-level game.
Messick has already played a role in Cleveland’s postseason run. The left-hander started Game 2 of the ALCS against Tampa Bay, giving the Guardians another option with experience against the Rays in this series. His assignment on Sunday offers Cleveland a chance to reset after a difficult Game 4.
The Rays, meanwhile, enter Game 5 with renewed momentum after their offense produced seven runs Saturday. Jonathan Aranda collected three hits and drove in two runs, while Yandy Díaz added a home run. Junior Caminero also delivered a key run-scoring double as Tampa Bay pulled away late.
Cleveland’s pitching decision comes with little margin for error. A victory would give the Guardians a 3-2 series lead and put them one win away from the American League pennant. A loss would leave them facing elimination in Game 6 in Tampa Bay.
Messick’s ability to keep the Rays’ offense under control will be central to Cleveland’s chances. With the series tied and the next game carrying significant consequences, the Guardians are trusting the left-hander to give them a chance to regain the advantage.
