Guardians star Jose Ramirez makes honest injury admission

Cleveland Guardians star Jose Ramirez underwent surgery for a hamate fracture earlier this season. While Ramirez was able to return in July after missing over one month of action, his numbers have been down overall this season. One has to wonder if the injury issue is still bothering Ramirez. The seven-time All-Star often avoids making excuses, but he did make an honest admission about the injury while speaking to reporters after Sunday’s 11-1 win against the Kansas City Royals, per Mason Horodyski.

“It’s a blend of dealing with pain, but also recovering the strength. Many times you feel that weakness when you’re hitting, it’s been only two months,” Ramirez said via interpreter. “People forget that that’s a very serious injury. It takes some time to recover, but we want to be in a good spot, trying to find the ways how to get better every day.”

Ramirez contributed on Sunday with two hits, one home run and four RBI. He is now hitting .243/.339/.393 across 103 games played. The third baseman has 11 home runs, 24 doubles and 31 stolen bases.

Ramirez’s numbers may be below his expectations, but he can still help Cleveland in a crucial manner as the team pushes toward the postseason. The Guardians are currently 3.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the American League Central, but they do hold the final AL Wild Card spot at the moment.

Jose Ramirez and the Guardians will have an off day on Monday before beginning a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Tuesday night.
