The Yankees bolstered their 2026 rotation in the winter when Ryan Weathers came over from Miami. Weathers has impressed over the years despite a lot of injuries. And on February 25, Yankees fans got a good first look at the left-hander.
New Yankees pitcher Ryan Weathers was excellent in his first outing with New York. The left-hander struck out five over 3.2 innings against the Nationals. He threw 49 pitches in total.
Weathers, who was able to unlock more velocity over the past few years, was sitting around 97 MPH with both his four-seamer and sinker.
Nationals starter Andrew Alvarez struck out three over two innings in that same game against the Yankees.
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes made his 2026 spring debut, one week before he’ll be one of the key starters for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. Skenes struck out four over 2.1 IP but walked four against the Atlanta Braves. He tossed 53 pitches in total.
This was an interesting game in general, particularly with respect to the Braves’ repeated success with ABS. Atlanta hitters had four successful challenges in the game, overturning a called strike into a ball.
As far as Skenes’ velocity was concerned, it was right where it needed to be. The right-hander was sitting mostly in the 98 MPH range, occasionally hitting 99 MPH.
On the other side, Bryce Elder struck out three over two innings for the Braves. Elder is fighting for a rotation spot for Atlanta.
The Rockies beat the Cubs 14-7 in Arizona.
Mickey Moniak, who made his spring debut on the 25th, went 2-3 with a leadoff home run off Cubs pitcher Jameson Taillon. Taillon, who was hit around by the White Sox last week, had another difficult outing this week. The righty gave up three runs and four hits, two of which were home runs, over two innings.
Newcomers T.J. Rumfield and Willi Castro had great days. Rumfield, acquired from the Yankees, hit two home runs. Castro, who spent the last third of last season with the Cubs, had two hits.
Ezequiel Tovar hit his first home run of the spring.
Jose Quintana struck out one in one inning.
Giants prospect Bryce Eldridge hit his first home run of the spring, a solo shot in the third inning against Brewers pitcher Peter Strzelecki. It was one of three home runs that the Giants hit on February 25. Luis Matos hit his first of the spring, as did newcomer Harrison Bader.
Adrian Houser started the game for San Francisco and gave up one run over two innings. The lone run came from a solo shot from Brice Turang.
Left-hander Carson Whisenhunt had a very tough day for the Giants, as he walked four and gave up five earned runs over one inning.
