Bo Bichette became the top free agent addition to the New York Mets roster after signing a three-year, $126 million contract last month. The two-time All-Star is undoubtedly one of the best contact hitters in the game. Yet he also ranks among the worst defenders in the game.
Although Bo Bichette is a shortstop by trade, the New York Mets will not use him in the role even with Francisco Lindor looking doubtful for the start of the 2026 campaign. Bichette will be the starting third baseman in the Mets lineup. The 27-year-old is already taking fielding drills in the Mets’ spring training camp at Port St. Lucie, Florida, to prepare himself for the position.

Bichette was a shortstop throughout his seven-year spell in the MLB with the Toronto Blue Jays. However, his defensive metrics were consistently among the worst for his position, even though he compensates for the deficiencies with his bat. He started as a second baseman for the Blue Jays after returning from injury for the World Series last year.
New York Yankees fans trolled the New York Mets on social media, responding to a video clip of Bo Bichette missing an easy ground ball while taking his fielding drills. The Mets fanbase also fired back with their own shots at the Yankees’ lineup by comparing him with Anthony Volpe.
“Homey has Anthony Volpe playing SS,” replied one Mets fan, taking a dig at the struggles of the Yankees infielder last year.
Homey has Anthony Volpe playing SS and is killing other teams defense.

“Reminds me a lot of Volpe,” one Mets fan responded.
Reminds me a lot of Volpe

“Bo was never a great fielder,” posted another Mets fan to defend Bichette.
Bo was never a great fielder, but he put in the work and did improve. Problem is, the issue is his arm, and that's not going to be easier for him at third.

“He’s learning a new position you think he’s gonna field everything flawlessly?” asked one fan.
Grow up, you look pathetic. He’s learning a new position you think he’s gonna field everything flawlessly? As if every Yankee fan wouldn’t want him playing third base over McMahon.

“Trolling a guy in spring training learning a new position,” added one Mets fan.
Trolling a guy in spring training learning a new position who has steadily kicked your team's ass is very juvenile.

“This happens to everyone. Especially in spring,” explained another Mets supporter.
Uh.. this happens to everyone. Especially in spring. Everyone boots balls.

“He would fit right in with the 2024 Yankees,” answered another Mets fan, referring to shoddy defending from the team that cost them a World Series.
He would fit right in with the 2024 Yankees

Despite his reputation as a mediocre defender, Bo Bichette showed improvement with his glove in the past few years. He was just shy of the league average with a .972 fielding percentage, while making 12 errors in 132 games. On the other hand, Volpe had a fielding percentage of .963 over 152 games while he led the American League with 19 errors.
