The Houston Astros were able to get back on track after a slower start to the season, but have been dealing with injuries throughout the roster as of late. The team has reportedly made the decision to call up one of their prized top prospects before the end of the first half and is expected to be available for the final series before the All-Star break. Let’s take a deeper dive into who the Houston Astros are calling up and what it means for the team going forward.
Brian McTaggart of MLB is reporting that the Houston Astros are calling up the organization’s top prospect in shortstop Brice Matthews. Matthews has been excellent in Triple-A this season and was set to play in the 2025 Futures Game during the All-Star break, as he has a .283/.400/.476 slash line with 10 home runs, 39 RBI, and 25 stolen bases this season.
Last week, Matthews discussed how he is doing and potentially being in a position to get called up and he explained how he is in a better spot than a year ago with his progression.
“I feel I’m playing really well. There’s always more work to do, perfecting my craft and just getting better every day. I feel like I’ve been playing well to this point – a lot better than I did last year. I’m just trying to keep maturing every day and be more consistent.”
This move could potentially coincide with center fielder Jake Meyers dealing with calf tightness that could land him on the Injured List. With Jeremy Pena continuing to be on the Injured List with a fractured rib, this could be a chance for the Astros to see what they have in their minor league system before the MLB Trade Deadline.
