Houston Astros Under Fire for Controversial Trade Decision

A reported trade between the Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins that would have sent reliever Bryan Abreu to Minnesota in exchange for outfielder Trevor Larnach was stopped at the last moment by Astros owner Jim Crane, according to national MLB reporter Michael Marino.

The two clubs had reached an agreement on the deal as the trade deadline approached, but the transaction was never finalized after Crane intervened and nixed it.

The potential swap stood out as one of the more notable moves under discussion this weekend. Both teams sit in contention within the American League playoff picture and appeared positioned as buyers looking to address specific roster needs.

For the Twins, acquiring Abreu offered a chance to add late-inning help from a pitcher who becomes a free agent after the season. Abreu has posted a 4.74 ERA over 41 appearances this year while notching seven saves, numbers that reflect some inconsistency yet still present a relatively low-risk opportunity given his impending free agency.

On the Astros’ side, Larnach would have supplied an outfielder capable of getting on base and contributing offensively. In 91 games this season he has hit .283 with eight home runs and 38 RBIs, along with a .441 slugging percentage and an .812 OPS. Those figures lined up with an area of need for Houston as it looks to strengthen its lineup for the stretch run.

Marino indicated it remains unclear whether discussions between the clubs have continued or whether talks have fully stalled following Crane’s decision.

The intervention drew sharp criticism from many Astros fans on social media, with several questioning why the owner would overrule general manager Dana Brown and expressing frustration that the deal was blocked. Comments ranged from calls for Crane to step aside to blunt assessments of his ownership.
