How should Yankees move forward following disappointing season?

The 2023 season began with high hopes for the New York Yankees. As the season progressed, however, it became clear that the team faced significant challenges, especially on the offensive side. Key players' lackluster performances and underachievements have been glaring issues throughout the year.

They have frequently failed to meet expectations, scoring two runs or less in a staggering 30 out of their 89 games this year. After losing seven in a row, three straight to Boston and a -26 run differential on the season, their playoff hopes are essentially nonexistent.

The Yankees currently sit at -10000 "No" to make the playoffs (a +2500 "Yes") at DraftKings Sportsbook, and it is time to get a better team ready for 2024.

A glimmer of hope: The youth movement

Despite the disappointment of the current season, there is a glimmer of hope for the Yankees in their young prospects waiting in the minors. Everson Pereira can inject much-needed energy and talent into the struggling Yankees' outfield.

Catcher Austin Wells is another prospect being closely watched by Yankees insiders and fans alike. Wells has the potential to be a star for years.

Right now and for the rest of the season, the Yankees must prioritize the development of their young prospects. Bring up Austin Wells, Jasson Dominguez, Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, Will Warren, Drew Thorpe or Chase Hampton when the roster expands in September.

By giving them opportunities at the major league level, the team can finally evaluate their potential and determine their role in the future of the franchise and build for next year.

Rebuilding for success

To truly recover from their current state of disappointment, the Yankees must embark on a rebuilding phase. One area that New York should target is their payroll. By shedding bad contracts like Josh Donaldson's, the team can free up financial resources of over $50M, including the hit from Aaron Hicks's deal.

The Yankees need to rid themselves of aging, expensive, and unproductive talent by using their $50M in salary savings on two under-28, big-talent free agents at the winter meetings, and re-sign Bader and Gleyber Torres to team-friendly deals.

Additionally, allowing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, and Anthony Rizzo to recuperate and condition for the 2024 season under no postseason pressure could be revitalizing, cathartic, and invaluable to the organization.

Looking ahead

While the current season may be a disappointment for the Yankees and their fans, there is reason to believe in a brighter future. Infusing young talent, strategic salary moves, and a focus on player development can set the stage for a successful, efficient and quick rebuild.
